• Project Name: Enhancing community awareness of their land rights
  • Client: TIP TESO
  • Location: UGANDA
  • Year Completed: 2021

Activity 1:      Mobilization meeting with selected local leaders in the project area: TIP convened the first meeting to challenge local leaders in advance, to proactively kick-start mobilization and organizing of their respective communities for the intervention. The mobilization meetings were very appropriate in communicating the resumption of the project. Those communities that had been fairly mobilized and organized were considered as priority areas for sensitization outreaches and land mapping followed soon after. This activity was also intended to enable the local leaders of the target Sub-county to understand their roles and responsibilities in the project processes

Activity 2:      Village based Land Rights Awareness raising sessions: The land rights awareness campaigns were held at village level and the meetings involved the indigenous women, men, youth PWDs and the elderly, representatives of Sub Counties and District Local Governments. The awareness focused on contents like secure and inclusive land tenure, land rights of the vulnerable, legal advice on arising land matters, alternative Dispute resolution approaches and village mobilization for voluntary demarcation, mapping and documentation processes. The project established Village Dispute Resolution Teams (VDRT) and brought on board Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) Parish Dispute Resolution Teams. Based on the experiences, VDRTs were constituted by the respective clan Committee representatives acceptable by the community members and their respective clan authorities. The Village Dispute Resolution Team was trained to undertake community mobilization, respond to any attendant land conflicts and/or make appropriate referrals. These committees use Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms when supporting any disputing parties to amicably resolve emerging land disputes. The land rights awareness campaigns were aided by Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials.

Activity 3:      Radio Talkshows: these were meant to widen awareness about the self-financed CCO process in other Sub-counties, provide information on land tenure system, customary land rights, responsible land management land rights of women and other vulnerable persons, land tenure security, and land conflict resolution; discussion of project progress and land boundary demarcation and documentation processes, procedures and processes of acquiring a CCO, among other project related discussions.

The above contributes to Key Result Area 1 of our strategic Plan 2019-2024:

increased access to justice and peaceful means to conflict resolution by individuals, communities and institutions
